About Louvered Living

This site exists because researching a freestanding aluminum automatic louvered pergola is unreasonably hard, and it should not be.

It is a five-figure decision in some cases, made once, on a product category where a meaningful share of listings are the same extrusion rebadged, the photography is frequently rendered rather than shot, and the specifications that actually predict whether the thing still works in year eight are buried below three paragraphs about “transforming your outdoor living experience”.

What This Site Does

We research the category from published engineering data, warranty documents, manufacturer specification sheets and building code requirements, and we translate it into the handful of numbers that decide a good purchase from a bad one: alloy grade, wind rating and its loaded condition, motor warranty length, IP rating, and whether an engineering letter exists for permitting.

Every ranking on this site is a spec ranking. That is a deliberate choice, and it comes with a limitation we would rather state plainly than bury.

What This Site Does Not Do

We do not physically test these structures. Nobody credibly does. A pergola is a permanent installation with a twenty-year design life; there is no honest way to run a comparative durability test across six configurations in a single backyard, and any site claiming to have done so is describing something other than what happened.

What we do instead is read the documents the manufacturers publish, compare them like for like, and be explicit about which numbers are verifiable and which are marketing. Where a specification is not published, we say it is not published rather than filling the gap with an estimate.

We do not accept payment for placement. See the editorial policy for how picks are selected and what would get one removed.

How We Are Funded

Affiliate commissions. If you buy through a link here, the retailer pays us a percentage and you pay exactly the same price you would have paid otherwise. It is the model that lets research pages exist without a paywall or an advertising takeover, and it carries an obvious conflict of interest which we manage by ranking on published specifications rather than on commission rates.

The full mechanics are on the affiliate disclosure page.

Corrections

If a specification on this site is wrong, or a manufacturer has updated a warranty term or a published rating, we want to know and we will correct it with a visible date stamp. Manufacturers are welcome to write in directly. Contact details are here.

Every page on this site carries a “last reviewed” date. If that date is stale on a page you are relying on, treat the pricing as indicative and confirm current figures with the retailer.
