A frame that lasts thirty years attached to a motor that lasts twelve means one thing: you will replace controls at least once, possibly twice, on a structure you only buy once. That is normal, it is manageable, and it should shape the purchase.

Three practical consequences:

Motor warranty is the highest-value line on the spec sheet. A five-year motor warranty against a one-year is not a small difference — it is the manufacturer telling you what they expect.
Buy where parts will exist in ten years. A no-name import at a very low price is a structure you may not be able to source a controller for. Established manufacturers with a US parts operation are worth a premium specifically for this.
Ask whether the motor is a standard module or proprietary. Standard tubular motor formats are replaceable from multiple suppliers. Fully proprietary assemblies tie you to one source for the life of the structure.

What Shortens Life Most

Coastal salt exposure without a marine-grade coating. Standard architectural powder coat degrades noticeably faster within a mile of salt water.
Running the louvers against an obstruction. A single bound slat — from grit, a bent end cap, or debris — forces the motor to work against a load it was not designed for. It is the fastest way to kill a drive unit.
Never flushing the drainage. Standing water inside a header beam accelerates corrosion at fastener points and does not do the motor housing any favours.
Skipping the first-season re-torque. Fasteners loosen with thermal cycling. Loose fasteners let the frame rack slightly, and a racked frame binds louvers.

The Maintenance That Actually Matters

It is a short list, which is the point of aluminum:

Annually: flush the gutter channels, rinse the frame, check the louvers move freely through full travel by hand with the power off.
Annually: confirm the manual override works. Discovering it does not during a storm is the wrong time.
After season one, then every few years: re-torque structural fasteners to the manufacturer’s figure.
Coastal only: fresh-water rinse quarterly. Salt is cumulative.
